Running has become a popular sport to practice. It’s cheap, easy, and once you start, some people acknowledge it can be addictive! Excuses appear everywhere if it is the first time, mostly related to time. The truth is, we all spend more than 1 hour on our smartphones or doing things that little will help to reach a peaceful state of mind.

Running or jogging is a common hobby because it takes you to a feeling of tension release or loose of substantial worries or thoughts. Most people feel outdoor running can even be therapeutic. Feeling the fresh air on the face, enjoying the peace of natural surroundings, and the possibility to experience a mindfulness moment while one concentrates in the movement, the rhythm of each stride, music playing on our earphones, or landscape. A hobby that holds many benefits and helps us to take a pause in our frantic lifestyle.

Running in a city like Leon it’s a privilege; one forgets about the running pace and possible city obstacles and gets carried away by the path that follows the course of the Bernesga river which crosses the city. Three, five, eight, ten kilometres, it does not matter, as long as a big smile after the deserved hot shower, appears.

Other people prefer long active walks or comfortable jogs to a hectic pace while running. In this case, the Candamia is also a beautiful place to go, leaving behind common problems and day-to-day stress.
For those who prefer weekend hikes or even cross style run, just across the Candamia, gentle but fun hills rise. An exceptional surrounding to get lost a few hours…well, considering it has not been raining for the last 24 hours. In this case, a family hike can go from a walk among pines to a mud bath.

There is also another option. Considering León is the region with most biosphere reserves in Europe, how about unifying a running experience with such environment? How about practising trail in Leon´s mountains? Yes! Trail running.
Of course, it may sound too much for those who have never attempted non-flat and mountainous terrains but trust me, the trail is not about speed. Amateur trail runners hike more than run, this means the goal is not X minutes, kilometres, or a finish line. The trail is more about moving fast in the wild surrounding, to enjoy that feeling of freedom and into the wild. It is like hiking as soon as we can, touring while we appreciate paths and trails between beech forests and limestone ridges. Walking or jogging uphill, and enjoying downhills that allow, depending on the terrain, to gain speed and feel just like a chamois!
The eastern mountain of León is not more than 70km from the city, and offer so many options to choose from depending on, company, style of hiking or trails you look for: Parma Mountain, Mampodres and Riaño Mountain… Moreover, this activity is not only a breath of fresh air for the routine but also a way of keeping the rural area and its villages alive thanks to active tourism.
Obviously, this last option requires much more time than just 40 minutes a day. Yet, the possibility is just a step away from us. Perhaps a weekend break! I invite you to make the most of León’s natural reserve treasures and reset mind and body. In my opinion, trail running is an excellent stimulus if you love running and nature; unifying a sport in its wildest state.
